In 2003, in only our 3rd season of First Division hockey, the Wombats Hockey Club came together to score one of the more memorable premierships in our history. After losing to Grand Final opponents Norths on two occasions prior to the big day, including a 11-1 loss in the final round and a 10-2 loss in the major semi-final, many people had written the wombats off. Even The Border Mail ran the headline "End of a fairy tale - Red hot Norths set to crush Wombats' dream" on the day of the final. But the Wombats spirit stayed true. In a close and exciting game the Wombats trailed early but snuck ahead to a 3-2 lead at the half. They extended their lead in the second half only to see the unbackable favourites fight back. In the end though, the Wombats held on for a famous 6-5 victory - their first Division 1 Premiership. The papers sounded a little different after that - with headlines such as "Wombats shock hot favourites" and "Wombats dig deep to score shock victory". Patriotic and poetic clubman, Trevor Barber, felt the occasion deserved to be remembered in song. Thus began a tradition of writing Premiership songs he hopes will continue for a few more seasons yet! Below is the song Trevor wrote for the 2003 Premiership.
