In 2003, in only our 3rd season of First Division hockey, the Wombats Hockey Club came together to score one of the more memorable premierships in our history. After losing to Grand Final opponents Norths on two occasions prior to the big day, including a 11-1 loss in the final round and a 10-2 loss in the major semi-final, many people had written the wombats off. Even The Border Mail ran the headline "End of a fairy tale - Red hot Norths set to crush Wombats' dream" on the day of the final.

But the Wombats spirit stayed true. In a close and exciting game the Wombats trailed early but snuck ahead to a 3-2 lead at the half. They extended their lead in the second half only to see the unbackable favourites fight back. In the end though, the Wombats held on for a famous 6-5 victory - their first Division 1 Premiership. The papers sounded a little different after that - with headlines such as "Wombats shock hot favourites" and "Wombats dig deep to score shock victory".

Patriotic and poetic clubman, Trevor Barber, felt the occasion deserved to be remembered in song. Thus began a tradition of writing Premiership songs he hopes will continue for a few more seasons yet! Below is the song Trevor wrote for the 2003 Premiership.

Written by Trevor Barber 2003, to the tune of Home Among the Gum Trees
Wombats Premiership 2003

I've been around the hockey a couple seasons maybe more

I've seen the sights I've had delights and many problem scores

But when my friends all ask me the team that I adore

I tell them right away.

Chorus 1

Give me a team with Thomas Swaby

And Justin the Baby

A Smart or two

And a Nato roo

Luke and Dave are Beaut

Lachie for a while

And Homer Canavan

The final was a thriller, it really tasted sweet

North Albury was the master our effort was complete

And North's they couldn't handle the Wombat Heartbeat

And we blew them right away

Chorus2

Give me a team with Ben and Pete the Inners

Al and Jack the grinners

There's two-called Roy

And Josh the boy

Andy and Tim are Great

Scotty's there to keep

And Homer Canavan

You can see we won the Final that deserves a toast

We really love to boast, just Wombats see and we all agree

We'll never settle down, cause we're PREMIERS yes sir ree

And we'll sing it all the way

Chorus 1 + 2
